Bettie Page - Casein by BrittMartin Bettie Page - Casein by BrittMartin
Casein on Illo board - 7x8"

My first attempt using Caseins - From Reference, I don't know the source unfortunately...

Edit: Something was bothering me with the scan, so I photographed the piece, somewhat happier with this...

•• Many thanks for the Daily Deviation, and to all who have favorited the piece, I'm very glad you like the piece!!

Recognised her before I saw the name, as far as I am concerned she is one of the few models who actually desrves the title super model.

You are VERY correct!
Her 'hey day' was 50-60 years ago and she's still a celebrity? Yep, that's Super!

I didn't know, but at the same time, that does not surprise me in the slightest!

I plan to eventually have a tattoo of beety done, not sure which picture to base it on though because there were so many great ones done of her. The oddest fact about her carrer is that she only actually modeled for about five years in total. You see so many different pictures of her you imagine her carrer being much longer.

I totaly agree words fail to describe her beauty.

Yeah, Just seven years or so...

You're right, there are sooo many great photos of her. I'd have to narrow it down (for myself of course) to one where she's smiling or laughing...
that only leaves a few hundred ;)

Yup I have already seen that interview, it is fasinating to hear how her life developed.

Short carrer and more magazine apperances than marilyn monroe and cindy crawford put to together, which is quite amazing.

You have a point It would have to be one with the classic betty smile which would cut down the volume of betty pictures to choose from.

Congrats on the DD, Britta!! :) I'd dabbled with casein for about a year because I liked the idea of the blend-ability and the matte finish (better for scanning than my shiny acrylics). I could find so little information on it and also found it challenging to find fresh tubes in stores because I think I was the only one buying it. You seem to have the knack, I like hoe expressive and clean/crisp it is- it almost seems as if it could have been done during her hey-day.

Many thanks!

I had heard of caseins for years, but it wasn't until a James Gurney blog post that pushed me to try them.
It really does almost push you into that period stylization...
Or I was 'spirit painting'. ;)

Have you found any sources of info on how to use them? I could find very little, aside from a small brochure Shiva had. Due to my ignorance of the medium I was a little wary about using it.

Was the brochure a hardcopy or from the 'shiva' site? That's what little info I found.

I did do a web search and found some pages, but haven't had a chance to actually explore.
I think I was looking for info on what type of brushes (natural or synthetic - although a synapse just fired... since the caseins origins are so old, it's probably natural - okay, so they fire slower nowadays! 8\ )

But I've used Gouache, and it's very similar.

It was a printed pamphlet that was near the Shiva (now something like "Masterson's", I believe) display case, though I think I saw it as a .pdf file on their site.

I just used the same brushes I used with acrylics, which were synthetic, but I tend to be rough on my brushes and therefor don't deserve sable.

The web site was where the link was to from the journeyGurney blog post. That's all the info I had too...
Close on the name (better than I could have remembered!) - [link]

I had used synthetics for this piece - mostly Robert Simmons sapphires and a few Windsor & newtons...

But I do use red sables for my oils...
